In my mothers home of Pangasinan, a small state in the island of Luzon, Philippines, there are 124 islands right off the coast mainly frequented by locals. This destination wasn’t planned for tourists- everyone who works here mainly speak the local dialect, Pangalatok, and it’s a bit messy getting around, but as anyone knows, these are the best places to visit. You take a small boat out to the islands and each one offers a different experience. A few of them have diving caves that lead out into the ocean, one was developed to be a pilgrimage; 2,000 steps to reach Christ The Redeemer, and the main island, best for swimming, allows you to fish for crabs and have them cooked by locals.

Right off the coast of Uno, a port town 3 hours away from Osaka, are a triplet of islands bought out by a publishing company where they’ve commissioned artists over time to create one-of-a-kind pieces and museums throughout. I mean, imagine… 3 small islands full of world-class art from the likes of Yayoi Kusama, Lee Ufan, Tadao Ando, Claude Monet, and so much more.

I was reminded of metro Manila while in Osaka, so naturally I really loved it. It was nice to feel like being free was ok… no guilt eating on the streets, more restaurants to walk into, more cheap shopping! I’m still thinking about that takoyaki!
